Cabernet Sauvignon is one of California's most prized varietals.  The majority of these highly rated wines came from Napa Valley often with the highest scoring Cabernets coming from Napa's mountain districts such as Atlas Peak, Spring Mountain, Howell Mountain and Diamond Mountain.

The Napa Valley's mountain districts all share a few attributes such as their higher elevations yielding greater solar radiance, steeper vineyards with great drainage, and red volcanic soils.  Those very same sorts of vineyard conditions exist here in El Dorado with the main difference being the source of the cooling influence.  Rather than the cool maritime breezes from the Bay our mountain climate is cooled by the diurnal flow of air coming off of the peaks of the Sierra Nevada.  The El Dorado appellation has mostly region II and III climate zones similar to that of Rutherford and the mountain districts.

The El Dorado Terroir has many of these classic conditions for growing great Cabernet Sauvignon in common with Napa's mountain districts. This fact compelled us to try to set a new benchmark for the varietal in the Sierra. We embarked on a search to locate growers that shared our intention to make a world class Cab from El Dorado. Our quest for Cabernet eventually brought us to the beautiful 2,500' elevation Duarte-Georgetown vineyard.

Our commitment to quality began in the vineyard by developing a working relationship with the grower.  We negotiated to pay more for the fruit contingent on certain vineyard practices being employed and parameters being met. We selected Cabernet Sauvignon clones 6, 7 and 337 and Petit Verdot and Malbec. Next the wine was crushed. The various clones were cold soaked, co-fermented, and then aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The packaging in heavy glass bottles, imprinted corks and unique screened label all convey an image of quality.

The resulting wine is a beautifully magnificent and intense California Cabernet Sauvignon. The persistent praise by who've tried the wine is that it doesn't taste like any Foothill Cabernet they've had and its quality definitely exceeds expectations. Our hunch about El Dorado Cabernet has proven to be correct. Grow the best fruit you can and set out with intention to make the best quality possible and the wine will speak for itself.

Tech/Tasting Notes 2005 Bumgarner Cabernet Sauvignon

Tech/Tasting Notes 2006 Bumgarner Cabernet Sauvignon

2007 Many Hands Red Blend

Our Many Hands blend is comprised of five Bordeaux varietals and takes inspiration from the amazing community of Cedar Springs Waldorf School. Our family has been so blessed to be welcomed and participate with such a kind-hearted and talented group of people. The collaboration, service, and integrity of this community has inspired our family and as a result our first blended wine, the 2007 Many Hands Cuvee Rouge. This ruby crimson hued wine has crushed cassis and black fruit aromas with a richly textured palate and very fine grained tannins on the finish. Comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot & Malbec this Bordeaux style blend retails for $27 per bottle and 5% from every bottle sold will be donated to the Cedar Springs Waldorf School, a school "worthy of all children".

2007 Tempranillo

Fall in love with this classic Iberian varietal. Tempranillo is very well suited to the Sierra Nevada as it prefers a slightly cooler climate. Our Tempranillo is a mouth full of rich dark berries and plumy goodness with a bit of smoke and vanilla in the background. Join us in our love affair with this beautiful wine. Retail $23 per bottle.

2008 Pinot Noir

El Dorado has some of the highest vineyard elevations in California with the long and cool growing season necessary to grow Pinot Noir. This high Sierra Pinot has a nose redolent of strawberry with subtle rose petal. This vintage ripened through the California forest fires of 2008 and the wine tells the story with its smoky notes. Retail $27 per bottle.
